Frequently asked questions
Answers to what people usually ask before their first consultation, grouped by working with us and the tax situations we handle.
Working With Us
How much do your services cost?+
Pricing depends on the complexity of your return, for example, whether you have multiple states, self-employment income, or several entities involved. We review your situation and provide a fixed quote before any work begins, so you know the cost upfront. If your situation changes partway through, additional documents or added complexity, we'll let you know before doing extra work, not after.
Will I work with the same preparer each year?+
We aim to keep the same accountant on your file year over year, so you're not re-explaining your situation from scratch every season. For complex or multi-part engagements, more than one member of our team may be involved, but you'll always have a clear point of contact.
How responsive are you, especially during tax season?+
We aim to respond within one business day, including during the busiest weeks of the season. If you ever go longer than that without a response, reach out again, it usually means something slipped through, not that you're being ignored.
Can I talk to someone on the phone, or is everything over email?+
You can reach us by phone, and we're happy to schedule a call with your preparer. If something is urgent, say so when you reach out, we can usually accommodate a same-day or next-day call outside of the busiest weeks of the season.
What if I think something was done incorrectly on my return?+
Tell us right away. Every return goes through a two-pass review before filing, but if you believe there's an actual error after the fact, we'll review it with a senior preparer and correct it.
Will my taxes actually get filed on time?+
Yes, assuming we have all required documents from you with enough time to prepare an accurate return. Delays most often happen when documentation is incomplete or arrives close to the deadline. If we're at risk of missing a deadline, we'll proactively file an extension and let you know the revised timeline.
Tax Situations We Handle
Do you handle multi-state tax returns?+
Yes. Many of our clients live in one state and work in another, commuting into New York being the most common version we see, and we handle the credits and calculations needed to avoid being taxed twice on the same income.
Can you help if I have income or financial accounts outside the U.S.?+
In many cases, yes. Cross-border situations, foreign income, and foreign account reporting requirements like FBAR add complexity, and the right approach depends on the specifics of your situation. We'll confirm during your consultation whether it's something we can take on directly or whether it needs additional specialist input.
Do you handle cryptocurrency taxes?+
Yes. We prepare returns involving crypto trading and other digital asset activity. Cost-basis tracking is usually the part that takes the most care, so having your transaction history organized before your consultation helps.
I have an LLC, can you help beyond just filing my annual return?+
Yes. Beyond annual filing, we assist with entity setup questions, S-Corp elections, quarterly estimated taxes, and coordinating with your bookkeeping. Our small business accounting service is built specifically around this kind of ongoing support.
Can you help with an ITIN application?+
In many cases, yes, for clients who need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number as part of their filing. Let us know during your consultation and we'll confirm whether we can handle it directly or point you to the right next step.
A previous preparer may have made a mistake on my return, can you fix it?+
Yes. We regularly prepare amended returns to correct errors from a prior preparer or a self-filed return, and to claim deductions or credits that may have been missed the first time around.
I have stock options or RSUs, do you handle equity compensation?+
In many cases, yes. Returns involving RSUs, ISOs, or other equity compensation come with cost-basis and, sometimes, AMT considerations that are easy to get wrong. We'll confirm the specifics fit our scope during your consultation, and flag it early if a situation needs specialist input beyond what we handle directly.
I have both a W-2 job and 1099 or freelance income, can you handle both?+
Yes, this is one of the most common combinations we prepare. We handle the deductions and quarterly estimated tax planning that come with layering self-employment income on top of a W-2 job.
